Store-based, universal applications rival web applications; they are beneficial for their good responsiveness as well as the offline experience they can offer, however web applications are gaining more and more traction. System management tools can encounter problems, however, because web applications are run within browsers and therefore not recognized by software inventory tools, as their usage is invisible to these traditional solutions.
Web applications do not have local infrastructure as they exist inside the browser. This empowers user to be more productive but can create security concerns, as we cannot tell where the data is going. It is difficult to distinguish in-browser applications from other websites, which makes web applications that much harder to detect. For these reasons, no software inventory solutions are available for web applications. Because of the growing use of web applications, software inventory tools need to adapt to current demands.
